In a remote spot in the Caribbean Sea, east of the Puerto Rican beaches, Anegada is the second biggest of the British Virgin Islands. With only 200 inhabitants, peace and quiet is one or Anegada´s main attractions, besides its spectacular beaches that deserve a special place among the best Caribbean beaches.
Anegada is the only coral island (the rest are all volcanic), so it is quite flat. From South to East, you find the 29 kilometre long coral barrier called Horseshoe Reef, which is the biggest in the Caribbean Sea and the third biggest in the world.
ACCOMMODATION AND THINGS TO DO
Although there is a wide range of places to stay, a good choice is renting a boat where you can not only sail but also spend the night anchored in a quiet and safe place.
Anegada is also one of the best beaches in the world to practise sport fishing; in fact it provides the other British Virigin Islands with fresh fish and lobster. But it is best known for the huge salt expanses that cover the west of the island and specially for the marvellous flamingos which live there.
Due to the many boats which have run aground here, this is an ideal place for diving. Fishing is another favourite, but you will need to get a special permit from the local authorities if you are planning to go fishing.
HOW AND WHEN TO GO
You can take a direct flight to the small and functional airport of Auguste George on the island itself.
Considering the weather conditions, the best time to go is from December to August.
